Frequently asked questions
Access Clean California is a public service program that helps clients find and apply for all of the energy assistance programs they qualify for. It is administered by GRID Alternatives and is funded by the California Air Resources Board. California is helping residents switch to cleaner vehicles to help meet new clean air and energy goals.
To be eligible to receive state-funded energy assistance, you must meet certain low- to moderate-income thresholds. Click on the "Find Programs" button to see what programs you may qualify for based on your household size, income and other eligibility criteria.
Financial assistance depends upon individual circumstances, including where you live, what your income is (your income threshold), which programs you select, and the type of vehicle that you select (for instance, if you select a 100% electric vehicle, you will most likely get the most money back, but hybrid electric vehicle programs won’t give you as much money back). Financial assistance can take many forms, including pre-purchase grants, post-purchase rebates, and low-interest loan assistance.
It might! Many energy assistance programs on this site can reduce up-front costs to purchase or lease a new or used electric, plug-in hybrid, or hybrid vehicle. It also costs much less to fill your car with electricity than to run it on gas. Electric cars are also cheaper to maintain than gasoline vehicles.
It depends on how quickly you provide the required documents, but you can count on it taking approximately 4-6 months in total. Some programs may take even longer if they are temporarily closed, but a member of the Community Care team will discuss this with you if necessary.
There are generally two types of financial assistance available:
- Grants: You get money pre-purchase.
- Rebates: You get money back post-purchase (only applies to a predetermined list of vehicles)

No. Checking your eligibility won't hurt your credit at all. In fact, many of these programs are meant for people with low credit scores.
